Are You Training or Just Working Out?

As I was enjoying a little “me” time this afternoon folding laundry and catching up on my favorite podcasts, a thought struck me which I knew I had to share.

I was listening to a podcast from Fr. Mike Schmitz from Ascension Presents where he talked about our prayer life, and asked if we’re being intentional with our prayers and study, with a specific end-goal in mind (i.e. if we’re training), or if we’re simply going through the motions (i.e. working out).

It was a fantastic podcast, which you should definitely check out here, but it got me thinking about my own health and fitness journey, and whether or not I’m working toward a specific goal (“training”), or simply going through the motions (“working out”).


You see, when you are training for something, there’s an extra spark in your belly. There’s motivation to push little harder, to go the extra mile, to sacrifice a little more. There’s excitement in your soul and there’s perseverance in your spirit. You feel challenged, and yet you feel accomplished. That’s training.

Working Out

On the other hand, when you’re ‘just’ working out, you’re checking a box. It might be a box to try to get healthier, feel better about yourself, or simply be able to say to others you worked out. Granted you often feel better after you workout thanks to the endorphins, but the spark in your belly is cold and your soul and spirit are just getting by. You don’t have that extra umph to push through.

So what?

As Fr. Mike encouraged us to take steps to be in training mode when it comes to our walk with God, so too should we take steps to break into training mode when it comes to our own health and fitness. Now this doesn’t mean we all have to go out tomorrow and sign-up for a marathon, that’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m talking about finding something to train for…be it a 5k, a workout program you want to finish, a push-up goal, or a time goal for a walk around the block. Whatever it is for you, by setting a specific goal you now have something to train for, and pretty soon you’re going to feel that fire in your belly, excitement in your soul, and perseverance in your spirit.

You’re going to work harder.

You’re going to get better quicker.

You’re going to enjoy the journey more.

And after all, isn’t that what it’s all about? Enjoying the journey and growing along the way?

Ready for a Challenge?

My challenge for you today is to find something to train for and to share the big news with everyone who is close to you.

Tell them you’re training for a 5k. Tell them you’re training to be able to do 20 pushups on  your toes. Tell them you’re training to be able to run 2 miles without stopping. Whatever your goal, tell your inner circle and watch as their support helps fuel your fire and you crush your goal. I’m excited for you. Now get training!
